The Galleria in Houston is one of the largest malls in the United States and the largest mall in Texas with over 400 stores and restaurants.
It’s located in the Uptown District of Houston and shares property with two highrise Westin hotels, and three office buildings called the Galleria Office Towers, as well as a private health club called the Galleria Tennis & Athletic Club.
Over 30 million visitors enjoy 2.4 million square feet of retail space including the fine shopping and dining found at The Galleria each year, making it the most popular shopping center and tourist destination in Houston.
There’s lots of places to shop at and even more to do at this luxury mall for people of all ages.
The Galleria features a variety of amenities including a full-size ice rink, a children’s play area, two swimming pools, three full-service banks, a post office, and much more.
The Galleria opened on November 16, 1970 almost 30 years after the original concept for a indoor shopping center and hotel in the area was scrapped.
Developer Gerald D. Hines, who also built Pennzoil Place, Williams Tower, and more than 400 other buildings in the Houston area, developed 600,000 square feet of retail space that was modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, one of the oldest shopping malls in the World.
The Galleria has undergone significant expansions and remodels since then.
Galleria II added 360,000 square feet of retail space on two levels, a second hotel, The Westin Galleria Houston, and the Galleria Financial Center in 1976.
The second expansion, Galleria III added another 700,000 square feet of space to the mall and anchored it with a brand new Macy’s shop.
Galleria IV was the Galleria’s third expansion, completed in 2003, and brought the total retail space to 2.4 million square feet and the addition of many of the high-end boutiques that fill that section of the mall today.
