The City of Katy is within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area and the Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties. It is often referred to as Old Katy, while the Greater Katy area is made up of large sections of the three unincorporated areas that the City of Katy is within. Most residents that live within the Greater Katy area have a Katy postal address, which causes some confusion about the actual boundaries of the City of Katy.
There are many upscale development and master-planned communities within the Greater Katy area, which includes Cinco Ranch, Pine Mill Ranch, Silver Ranch, Green Trails, Grayson Lakes, Seven Meadows, Pin Oak Village, Firethorne, and Grand Lakes. Houston’s extraterritorial jurisdiction extends past the Greater Katy area, so it is possible that these areas become annexed by the City of Houston in the future, but the City of Katy is an incorporated municipality that can never be annexed.
The Greater Katy area is 181-square mile boundary, while the City of Katy spans 10.7 square miles. It has both residential and commercial areas, while many of the properties in the Greater Katy area are gated communities and master-planned neighborhoods. There are plenty of retail, entertainment spaces, and business hubs in the area and other major areas are easily accessible via I-10.
The Greater Katy area is known for its affordable homes, range of housing options, and great schools. Katy homes are in great locations next to schools, parks, entertainment, and shopping centers. Many master-planned communities in the area are undergoing development and building significant populations in the Texas area. Cinco Ranch is one of the most significant portions of the Greater Katy area. It is a 7,400 acre master-planned development built to create a beautiful community that meshes natural beauty and landscape with superior home design. It is located 25 miles west of Harris County, 10 miles north of Fort Bend County, and about 10 miles southeast of the City of Katy.
Katy & Cinco Ranch Neighborhood History
James J. Crawford received a land grant that included the Katy area in 1845, but it wasn’t until the late 1800s that things really kicked off in the City of Katy. It was a difficult area to settle because of the winter cold and summer heat, so much so that thirty years after Crawford received the land, there were only three people recorded to have settled here.
In 1893 the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad was under development and passed right through Katy, which was then called Cane Island. A few years later the railroad started operating, and it didn’t take long before families travelled to the area to develop a city. In 1896, James Oliver Thomas formed the town and named it through a post office application. By the early 1900s, there were hotels, stores, farms, and ranches built that eventually replaced the wild prairie.
Farmers used the land to grow cotton and peanuts at first, but soon switched to rice production. Katy eventually became known for its rice farming and there are still concrete rice driers located here that operated in 1944, the oldest ones in the state of Texas. When IH-10 was built here in 1966, more and more development came to the area as people looked to expand the Houston area. Now it is an area that is recognized for its growth and sustainability.
Cinco Ranch also has a diverse history that goes back before Texas became a republic. The Spanish government granted pioneer Moses Austin to settle 300 families in the valleys of the Brazos and Colorado rivers. One settler was Randolph Foster, with a plot of land that is located across Fort Bend and Waller counties. When Foster’s daughter married Thomas Blakeley, a cattleman, it became Blakeley Ranch.
Blakeley eventually sold the land to William Wheless in 1937, who along with four of his friends created Cinco Ranch. Together they grew peanuts and rice and raised cattle. Nearly 40 years later in 1984, Cinco Ranch was purchased as part of the largest raw land transaction in the history of Houston to build the current master-planned community of Cinco Ranch.

Greater Katy is an area of high population and economic growth. There are many companies that are headquartered in the surrounding Katy areas including the Igloo Corporation, Academy Sports and Outdoors, and BP America. To match the residential growth that occurred in the Katy surrounding areas many shopping malls and retail centers have been developed.
In Cinco Ranch there are tons of parks that range in size from small neighborhood parks to major recreation centers. You can find tons of activities to participate in with the whole family in Cinco Ranch including swimming, fishing, sailing, tennis, basketball, and paddle boating. There are two major lakefront parks, which make it feel like you are on vacation whenever you step outside your home.
There is also a network of greenbelts in Cinco Ranch, making it easy to commute anywhere by hiking, biking, or jogging. Trails extend through forest areas and wetland and arrive at recreational facilities and schools in the community. There are plans to connect greenbelts to the Buffalo Bayou Hike And Bike Trail so that Cinco Ranch residents can ride their bike to the Grand Parkway.

There are tons of activities to participate in as a community member of the City of Katy or the Greater Katy area. For children there are plenty of summer events such as the Gymnastics Summer Camp where students learn about fitness, play fun games, and learn to tumble. There’s also a Summer Workshop where students can prepare for the SAT and ACT tests while receiving one-on-one instruction to help them with any test questions that they have.
At the end of summer is the Katy Tailgate, which feels like an old school pep rally. At the Katy Tailgate you can participate in a hot wing cook-off contest, purchases goods at vendor booths, enjoy live food, and watch some great entertainment. Plus it’s totally free if you bring school supplies or backpacks that are donated to the YMCA of Katy.
